Remember when The Divynls sang, “There’s a fine line between pleasure and pain”? Well the same goes for outfits.

When you think about celebrities, who do you think is sexier: Carla Bruni or Brittany Spears? Jennifer Anniston or L’il Kim?

There’s a fine line on between sexy and trashy and when I spent last weekend on the Gold Coast, I saw many women crossing that line. How do we even know what sexy is? I think it’s pretty easy to get confused.

All around us in films, advertising and music videos especially, sexy is portrayed as scantily clad women dancing, grinding and gyrating against, well, pretty much anything. But is that really sexy? I think not. Sexy is not about exposing as much flesh as possible. Sleazy dressing leaves nothing to the imagination.

No one is wondering what you’ve got on under your dress because they can already see it. This was a common problem on the Gold Coast where they seem to have a pretty loose definition for what constitutes a “dress.”

There were a lot of brightly coloured bandage dresses, a lot of tiny skirts and stripper heels. I saw so many gorgeous girls, but they looked utterly ridiculous.

There’s nothing sexy about tottering around in a pair of giant heels in the world’s tightest and smallest dress and constantly pulling it down to try to cover your bottom. Since when is flashing your bottom to the world sexy?

These girls looked uncomfortable, awkward and sometimes embarrassed – and that ain’t sexy. When you think about celebrities, who do you think is sexier: Carla Bruni or Brittany Spears? Jennifer Anniston or L’il Kim?

I know sexy is in the eye of the beholder, but there are some things that are universal. Sexy isn’t just about what you wear, but rather a combination of outfit and attitude. Here are my top tips on how to look sexy, not sleazy.

1. Wear proper underpants. That means no panty lines, no g-strings hanging out the top of your pants; invest in some good quality and well fitting seamless underwear. Despite what you may think, visible underwear is not sexy, trust me on this one. Save it for the bedroom, you might have a smaller audience, but at least it will be an appreciative one.

2. Colour your world. Colour can make a difference to an outfit and your attitude. Red lipstick can make you feel instantly sexy. The same goes for anything red really: knickers, nails, shoes, scarves. The same goes for metallics.

3. Legs or cleavage – it’s time to choose. The age-old rule is that you can only have one or the other. If you’re showing a lot of leg, you cannot show too much chest, it gives too much away and honestly looks cheap. It’s about picking your best asset and making it work for you. That said, there is such a thing as too much cleavage. Sexy is about giving a hint, it’s about suggestion, glimpses. Your outfit shouldn’t be a full blown peep show.

4. Bring sexy back. Think about it: backs are sexy. This season there’s a lot going on with backs, there are some brilliant dresses out there that look simple from the front, but the back is where the party’s at. Open backs, lace, rope and mesh backs all make for a very dramatic effect.

5. Texture is sexy. Think about the fabrics you’re wearing. Dresses made from satin, cashmere and soft, touchable fabrics will hug your curves and leave you feeling like a total sexy bomb.

6. The eyes have it. There’s nothing sexier that a dark, smoky eye. Combined with the right hair, outfit and accessories, it’s an unstoppable combination.

7. Sexy is all in the mind. Confidence is sexy, there’s no doubt about that. Sexy is all about attitude and how you feel; and if you feel good you will look good and give off wonderful vibes.

It may be cheesy, but don’t forget: one of the sexiest things you can wear is a smile.
