A suspected drag race has ended in tragedy, with two teenagers found dead after their car was driven off EJ Whitten Bridge in Keilor East.

One of the victims, 18-year-old Ivana Clonaridis, was a passenger in the blue Holden ute being driven by Harley Churchill, 19.

According to police, two cars were spotted speeding along the Western Ring Road at 1.30 am on Wednesday.

Soon after, Mr Churchill, who is estimated to have been travelling at a speed of 160 kilometres per hour, lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a metre-high barrier before plummeting off the 55-metre-high bridge and bursting into flames.

A witness told Macquarie Radio the scene unfolding before him was “like watching a movie”.

“I was driving to work at 1.30 am and I was doing 100kph and these two cars came flying past me and gave me a fright. It would have been 100 or 200 metres in front of me. I saw one of the cars lose control and go over the railing.

“It burst into flames, it was surreal,” he said.

Shocked friends and family have taken to social media to express their grief over the death of the two teens.

Ms Clonaridis’ mother posted a heartfelt message on her Facebook page: “My baby is gone, what am I going to do without her? I don’t want her to be with the angels, I want her home, she was my angel.”

Close friend Jess Yaxley posted: “Rest easy my sweet angel. This feels so wrong on so many levels. I still can’t believe it. I’ll see you next week right. I’ll talk [to] you tomorrow right you will be forever with us, always.”

Police are currently on the look out for the second vehicle involved in the race, a 2003-2004 silver Ford sedan with green P-plates.

According to Inspector Bernie Rankin, the sedan had been spotted earlier that night in Campbellfield at an illegal street party. The driver was then seen taunting drivers of other vehicles to race.

“This is a classic case of testosterone, adrenalin, young fellows and fast cars. It’s just a dreadful mix and we’ve had very, very serious consequences,” said Inspector Rankin.

Police are currently investigating whether Ms Clonaridis and Mr Churchill were present at the Campbellfield street party prior to the crash, along with possible reasons as to why Mr Churchill lost control of the ute.

“We’re still checking, maybe there was contact between the vehicles, maybe there wasn’t; we’re still looking at all of those parts of the collision scene to work out precisely what’s happened,” said the inspector.
