Greek champion Olympiakos will look to complete the Super League and Cup double when it takes on fierce rival AEK Athens in the Greek Cup Final on Sunday.

The match will be played at the Athens Olympic Stadium, although the majority of the 69,100 seats will remain empty following a decision by the Greek government to play the game with no supporters, a reaction to crowd violence in previous games this year.

Deputy Sports Minister Stavros Kontonis took the radical measure of cancelling the Cup after incidents during the first leg of the semi-final between PAOK and Olympiakos in Thessaloniki forced the game to be canceled. Kontonis, fearing violence in further games, then canceled the entire competition, although for some reason did not suspend the remainder of the Super League, despite crowd violence also occurring during games of that competition.

The move angered the Greek Football Federation (EPO), which called on FIFA and UEFA to intervene. Pressure from FIFA forced Kontonis to back down on his decision with a compromise that the remaining matches be played behind closed doors.

That means tonight’s Cup final between two of the biggest clubs in Greek football will be played without supporters of either side, in a game that could have sold out several times over.

Olympiakos is clear favourite to lift the trophy, although AEK, the only Greek side to defeat Olympiakos this year, will be hoping to upset its rival and win its first piece of silverware in five years.
