Greece’s leading soccer club at the moment, Olympiakos, might be nine points clear at the top of the table, but it has been given a shake up by Xanthi right after beating Asteras Tripolis 2-1 on Wednesday.

Xanthi, on the other hand, outplayed Iraklis 1-0 in Thessaloniki on Tuesday to climb up to second place, while Panathinaikos suffered yet another major loss by Platanias on Thursday in Hania, with Yaya Banana scoring the only goal of the game on the 74th minute.

Along with the Greens, Panionios is joint third, three points behind Xanthi after drawing 1-1 at home with PAS Giannina.

Jose Morais’ AEK stands defeated in fifth place following a 0-0 match with Panetolikos in Athens, and PAOK is resting in sixth place after scoring 1-0 against Levadiakos.

Kerkyra struggled to draw 1-1 with Atromitos and Larissa magaged to nail a last moment 2-1 over Veria.

Meanwhile, although number three, Panathinaikos F.C., the oldest active soccer club in Greece and a member of the Superleague, has set up its own esports division, according to Esports Betting Report.

The Athens club plans to take part in competitions for League of Legends, Starcraft, Dota2, CS:GO, FIFA 17 and NBA2K.

After asking fans on Facebook for their feedback, Panathinaikos will begin its esports venture with League of Legends.

“Competition in the digital environment and the combination of speed, accuracy, strategic thinking, team spirit, etc. is proving extremely attractive as an option for the general public as entertainment (spectators) and as a career (players). Panathinaikos AO, like other top clubs worldwide, in line in the times, always seeks development and progress,” Panathinaikos president Dimitris Baltakos said.

The announcement makes Panathinaikos the 26th professional sports team to add an esports element to its operations.
