An off-duty police officer was in hospital after being attacked by a suspected drug addict who pulled a flick-knife on him as he emerged from the Omonia train station.

According to the officer’s account, the addict asked for money and, when he refused, produced the knife and slashed him across the face before fleeing.

The extent of the officer’s injuries was unclear.

Later yesterday, two policemen were run over by a motorist outside a soccer ground in Menidi, northwest of Athens.

The perpetrator had been trying to avoid a police inspection, officers said. The injuries were not serious.
