It has been a busy time for the Mytilenean Brotherhood of NSW over the last few weeks with the election of a new committee under Peter Psomas, a soldout dance, and the establishment of a kafeneion for older members at Mytilenean House. What should have been just a period of celebration has turned to one of reflection as their upcoming program will now include fundraising initiatives for the Earthquake Appeal for Lesvos.

On Sunday 2 July, in partnership with the national body, Panlesvian Association of Australia and New Zealand, a BBQ fundraiser will be held to support those affected by the 12 June earthquake, especially in Vrisa village.

The president of the association, Sydneysider John Spanelis from Greek Radio 1683, was the most recent president of the Mytilenean Brotherhood. He, along with Milton Kodos from Vrisa village and Myrsini Bougoukas, who was part of the recent A Taste of Lesvos initiative, join many other members of the local Lesvos community in helping out. This will include Member for Canterbury, Sophie Cotsis who has heritage from the island.

Mr Psomas told Neos Kosmos, “it’s times like these when the community can really make a difference. Hopefully our efforts in Australia can be useful. I also urge people to show your support by donating and by visiting our lovely island of Lesvos this year and the next.”

The earthquake has certainly shaken the island. The fatalities, injuries, and the damage caused has come on top of the humane handling of the refugee crisis which has eased significantly, and of course the economic crisis which has affected the country.

However, it is still safe to visit and navigate as traffic flow and daily life on the third biggest island in Greece is beginning to return to normal.

Authorities are dealing with the debris and destroyed dwellings as best they can.

Members of the Hellenic community of NSW and the broader community are encouraged to get involved and show their support by attending one of the scheduled events and by donating to the Appeal.
