Despite being the number one priority of the Greek government, tax evasion is still going strong. According to the latest data collected by the country’s independent public revenue authority, one in five businesses audited by tax inspectors have been found in violation. According to Naftemporiki newspaper, tax auditors have carried out 61,653 onsite inspections from January to August, of which more than 40,000 were undertaken in July and August, during the peak of the tourist season. The most frequent violation noted was failure to properly issue cash register receipts.
