Some of Sydney’s most prominent Greek Australians gathered at the Paddington Town Hall last Sunday at a fundraising event for the restoration of the St Sophia Cathedral.
The fundraiser was organised by the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, represented by president Harry Danalis and vice-president Nia Karteris.
Catering was provided by restaurant 1821. Among those present were the Consul General of Greece, Dr Stavros Kyrimis, Tasha Vanos AM, former mayor of Randwick, John Prokopiadis, Dr Nick Pappas AM, and other club representatives and entrepreneurs.
More fundraisers are expected to take place over the next two years including a BBQ taking place at the temple itself in Paddington. The cost of restoration of the historic temple is estimated at $650,000. So far, the committee for the restoration has managed to gather $73,000 in donations and pledges, most notably from the descendants of the original Kastellorizian families who built the temple in 1927.
