It couldn’t have been a better start to the year for Greece where sailing’s concerned, with Ariadni Paraskevi Spanaki and Myrto Papadopoulou taking out the gold medal in the U17s category at the 420 World Championships in Perth this week.

Out of a total of 12 races featuring 18 competing boats, the young duo performed exceedingly well, climbing the podium with a total of 83 points.

Coming in second were neighbours Italy, Carlotta Scodnik and Camilla Scodnik with 122 points, and in a close third Switzerland’s Sophie Mosegaard and Samira Rast with 142 points.

In the overall rating of the competition that saw 41 boats taking part, Spanaki and Papadopoulou took out eighth place, while Greece’s U17s Konstantinos Vardalis and Panagiotis Giorgos Matsades were ranked 10th overall with 112 points.

Meanwhile the William Sanchez Trophy was presented to Greece’s Telis Athanasopoulos Yogo and Dimitris Tassios as the top placed team aged 16 and under.
