In a first, Aegean Airlines says it transported more than 13 million passengers last year, significantly more than other years but with the same number of flights.

The boost has been consistent for the airline, with passenger growth rising by nine percent annually for their international routes.

The airline released a statement saying that despite competition for domestic routes, domestic routes saw a similar increase reaching 5.9 million passengers compared to 5.7 million in 2016.

They said frequent and appealing fare offers lead to these higher load factors.

Dimitris Gerogiannis, Managing Director at Agean said the airline had achieved the main targets set out for 2017 and will begin 2018 by planning 18 new destinations and a total of 700,000 extra seats.

Focussing on the winter months is also key for the airline.

“Optimal utlisation of the winter months is the common goal which the airline, other industry stakeholders, airports and the State need to invest with the right policies and products in order to provide a solid foundation for the necessary investments, which will lead to the further development of Greece’s Tourism product,” Mr Gerogiannis said.
