Athens was struck by 4.4 -magnitude earthquake at 10.24 pm (local time) last night. Although the earthquake was felt throughout the capital, setting off car alarms, and evoking memories of the devastating 5.9 quake of 1999 no damage or injuries had been reported for at least eight hours after it occurred. According to the Athens Geodynamcis institute the quake’s epicentre was located in the outer suburb of Stamata, 25 km northeast of the city, at a depth of 14 km. A series of smaller afterquakes, of 2-2.5 magnitude followed, with researchers expecting activity to continue for a few days. The region has been active in recent days and the latest earthquake seems to be the peak of this activity, Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos stated to the media, without ruling out the possibility of another earthquake.
