AEK achieved a stunning result on Sunday, beating Aris 4-0 in Thessaloniki in Manolo Jimenez’s first game in charge and put themselves back in the hunt for the Super League title.

The win, which even the most ardent AEK fan could not have expected, pushed the Yellows into third place with 10 points after six games.

They are just six points behind leaders Olympiakos.

Jimenez must be wondering what kind of crisis AEK were supposed to be in after seeing his side dominate at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium.

There was no looking back after Pantelis Kafes opened the score four minutes before half time.

The inconsistent Nacho Scocco showed that he can be magnificent on his day as he scored twice in 10 minutes to give the visitors an unassailable 3-0 lead on 68 minutes.

Raffik Djebbour rounded off the rout, which gets the Jimenez era off to a moral-boosting start, with a goal in injury time.

The only other winners on Sunday were Asteras Tripolis who beat Larissa 2-0 away from home.

Tumer Metin had missed a penalty for the home side in the 15th minute before Chris Conceicao and Roberto Calmon Felix scored both of the visitors’ goals before the half time whistle was blown.

The defeat leaves Larissa, due to move into a new stadium soon, just one point above the relegation zone. Asteras are in sixth place on nine points.

Kerkyra and Iraklis are also on nine after home draws. Iraklis will rue two points dropped after conceding an injury time equalizer to Panserraikos, who picked up their first away points but still remain rooted to the bottom of the table on four points.

Kerkyra also drew 1-1 after being pegged back by visitors Kavala.

The day’s other game between Atromitos and Olympiakos Volou also ended in a draw, 2-2, with the visitors equalizing twice.

Olympiakos stayed top of the Super League thanks to an emphatic 3-0 win over Xanthi on Saturday but Panathinaikos are hot on their heels, just one point behind, after an important 1-0 win over PAOK.

The Reds, who now have 15 points from six games, cruised to victory in northern Greece.

The game got off to a perfect start for the visitors as record summer signing Albert Riera stole into the box and jinked past Austrian goalkeeper Michael Gspurning before stroking the ball into the net.

The opening goal was as class as the second one was cheeky.

After a penalty box scramble in the 54th minute, Vassilis Torosidis, with his back to goal, caught out the Xanthi defenders and goalkeeper by backheeling the ball, which squirmed into the net between outstretched legs and arms.

Youngster Yiannis Fetfatzidis rounded off the win on 75 minutes. In what was a memorable few days for the 19-year-old, who made his national team debut against Latvia last Friday, the midfielder scored his first goal for the senior Olympiakos side after receiving a Kevin Mirallas cross and sidestepping a Xanthi defender in the box to strike a low shot into the net.

Olympiakos’s win meant it was vital that Panathinaikos won their home game against PAOK. The Greens did just that despite the fact they played the game behind closed doors.

The only goal of the game was fit to win any match and came from an unlikely source. Few people would have expected the ball to end up in the net when defender Loukas Vyntra unleashed a shot from a long way outside the penalty area in the 20th minute, yet that is exactly what happened.

Vyntra’s thunderbolt helped settle Panathinaikos’s nerves after tricky period in recent games.

The problems, instead, are for PAOK to solve now as they lie a disappointing 14th with just five points.

In Saturday’s other game, Ergotelis got a valuable 1-0 away win at Panionios. Sergio Leal Gonzalez scored the winner shortly before half time.
