Greece has extended its unbeaten run to six matches following a 2-1 victory over Austria in a friendly match played in Vienna on Wednesday.

Goals by Celtic striker Georgios Samaras and PAOK Thessaloniki midfielder Georgios Fotakis on his debut were enough for Fernando Santos’ side to triumph over the home team.

Fotakis was left unmarked in the 81st minute when he collected a pass by Samaras and fired into the far corner past goalkeeper Christian Gratzei.

Earlier Fotakis was the provider as he set up Greece’s opening goal in the 48th minute, when Samaras met his cross from the right with a header that wrong footed Gratzei.

Fotakis came on as a second-half substitute for Panagiotis Kone, the other Greek player to earn his first cap.

Austria defender Christian Fuchs equalised with his first international goal in 36 matches, his powerful 25-metre attempt taking goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas by surprise in the 67th minute.

Austria dominated the first half and was awarded a penalty in the fifth minute after Sokratis Papastathopoulos fouled Stefan Maierhofer. However, defender Florian Klein’s low shot was easily saved by Tzorvas.

Austrian coach Dietmar Constantini left captain Marc Janko out of the starting line-up in favour of Maierhofer, who also replaced Janko in Austria’s previous two games when the FC Twente striker was out with a groin injury.

Maierhofer had a goal disallowed for pushing Tzorvas in an aerial contest for the ball from Fuchs’ pass in the 36th minute.

The Greek team’s next official match will be away to Malta in March as part of the EURO 2012 qualifiers. Greece currently sit second in Group F, two points behind leaders Croatia.
