Yiorgos Lanthimos’ Dogthooth was selected as one of nine films that will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 83rd Academy Awards®.

Sixty-six films had originally qualified in the category.

Dogtooth may well add an Oscar to its rather impressive collection of awards.

Last year in Cannes, the jury for the Prix Un Certain Regard – comprised of Italian director and screenwriter Paolo Sorrentino, actress Julie Gayet, Toronto Festival director Piers Handling and journalists Uma Da Cunha and Marit Kapla – awarded Dogtooth the festival’s prize for films of “a certain outlook”.

Lanthimos also took home the Prix De La Jeunesse, awarded by a committee, whose members were between the ages of 18 and 25.

Sexuality is key in the Cannes-decorated Dogtooth, whether tucked away in the David Hockneyesque set pieces, or hiding behind the actors’ stunted speech patterns.

The list of nine also includes Algeria’s Outside the Law, Canada’s Incendie, Denmark’s In a better world, Japan’s Confessions, Mexico’s Biutiful, South Africa’s Life above all, Spain’s Even the rain, and Sweden’s Simple Simon.
