Victoria Police have gotten a tougher new look following a recent uniform overhaul.

Gone are the approachable, powder-blue shirts to be replaced by darker, more structured shirts for both the men and women in the force. Fashion designer Alex Perry has commented on the fashion overhaul, claiming the new uniform is more “aligned with more cosmopolitan and progressive societies such as New York and London”, both of which are incidentally two of the world’s fashion capitals. However, among recent unrest in Victoria Police leadership, Perry made a good point by asking, “Is this what we need?”

The change in colour has not been done purely from a fashion perspective. Psychologists said the darker colour would give the officers a stronger, tougher image. In a bid to retain a consistent image, the trademark blue and white checkered hat band, an international police symbol, will remain. The new outfits is the first overhaul since 1979. Trials and roll-out of the new look will commence next year.
