Professor Jack Davis will be visiting the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens to present a series of seminars and lectures on various topics relating to archaeology in classical Greece and surrounding areas.
“It really is a chance to hear an archaeologist at the top of his game talk about his work,” Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens, executive officer, Dr Wayne Mullen told Neos Kosmos.
“One of the talks (Professor Davis) is giving is about the Palace of Nestor in Pylos. It’s an incredibly important site, that is the best preserved Bronze Age Mycenaean Palace. This imagery when it’s put together and when it can be interpreted is incredibly important to understanding Greek culture,” Dr Mullen said.
The lectures and seminars will include: the history of the archaeology of the Palace of Nestor in Messenia; the archaeology of Greek colonialism as the site of Apollonia in modern Albania; the history and archaeology of Ottoman and early modern Greece; and the history of classical archaeology in particular its relationship to nationalist movements in the Balkans.
Professor Davis is the Carl W Blegen Professor of Greek Archaeology at the University of Cincinatti and current director, American School of Classical Studies in Athens.
Professor Davis will conduct public lectures all over Australia including Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle, Armidale, Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
