With news that Helen Coonan quit the Senate, the rumour mills are rife with an opening for Greek Australian politician and NSW Liberal Party president Arthur Sinodinos to take her place. And the Liberal Party have made it clear that if Sinodinos wants this position, it’s his for the taking.

Sinodinos, who was John Howard’s chief of staff, needs to decide whether or not he wants to put his hand up for this role.

Coonan who leaves the Senate is said to be doing so due to an illness in her family. In her retirement speech, Senator Coonan urged for more transparency in foreign investment, especially from China.

Sinodinos, whose politics lean well onto the right, became president of the NSW Liberal party – after an overwhelming show of support by Liberal party delegates – in a bid to bring honesty to the NSW Liberal party that is currently broken by factions.
