The University of Melbourne’s School of Historical and Philosophical Studies Classics and Archaeology will be holding informal summer courses for those who want to learn more about the Ancient Greek world.

The university’s academic staff will be on hand to offer their expert advice on the four courses: Cities of the Greek and Roman World; Aristotle’s Human Flourishing Project; Love and Relationships in Ancient Greece; and An Introduction to Classical Mythology. Dr Christopher Gribbin will lead each of the four subject areas.

Cities of the Greek and Roman World looks at the architecture and art of the Greek and Roman world by exploring a number of the most famous and fascinating archaeological sites. This course would suit those wanting to develop a stronger understanding of architecture and art from Classical Greece to Christian Rome. In the course, Aristotle’s Human Flourishing Project, you will be given a chance to debate the bigger questions in life through Aristotle’s vision of the ideal life. A chance to examine Aristotle’s vision along with the modern research and thinking which continue his tradition.

The course, Love and Relationships in Ancient Greece explores how the Greeks thought about love and relationships. Most the ideas are explored through themes in poetry, theatre, philosophy and art.

The main course, An Introduction to Classical Mythology, will let you explore and try to understand some of the most important and interesting myths of the Greeks and Romans, such as the Trojan War, Oedipus, Hercules, Orpheus, the Minotaur and Greek versions of the beginning of the universe. Designed for people wanting to broaden their knowledge and understanding of these myths which have inspired much of Western art, literature and thought.
