The nominations are in for the 2012 Golden Globe Awards, with Greek American Director Alexander Payne one of the front runners for his film The Descendants.

The Golden Globes – a precursor to the Academy Awards and often a predictor of what Academy Awards are on the horizon – will be held on January 15, 2012 in Beverly Hills.

The Descendants stars George Clooney as a land baron who tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident. The film has been nominated in major categories including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor – Drama, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Payne has previously won Best Screenplay at both the Golden Globes and Academy Awards in 2004 for his film Sideways.
Other favourites in this year’s nominations are War Horse, a Steven Spielberg drama set during World War 1, and in stark contrast The Artist, a black-and-white silent film about Hollywood.

The Descendants is released in Australia nationally on 12 January.
