Sony finally shrugs off the legacy of its partnership with Ericsson and goes it alone with smartphones in 2012. The Xperia S is the company’s first solo offering. The company is making sure that when you buy a smartphone this year, you don’t just buy the handset, you buy access to these services as well.

Specs-wise, the Xperia S won’t break any ground, and while HTC and Samsung may attempt to streak ahead with powerful quad-core processors this year, Sony sticks with a dual-core option instead. A 1.5GHz dual-core, mind you, and one we imagine will have the grunt to power most, if not all, of this year’s best apps and games. Surely you will fall in love with the new-look handset design; a subtle evolution on the design of Sony Ericsson phones last year. Also evolving is the screen tech you can expect to see this year, with the Xperia S packing an HD resolution screen; however, there’s no word yet on whether the Sony Bravia Engine software is included again this time around. Sony also packs a 12-megapixel Exmor-R camera into the Xperia S, but this means little until we see it in action.
