Huawei joined hundreds of other device makers in launching thousands of new products at CES 2012 in Las Vegas this year, and, while it was easy to get lost amongst the din of the crowd, Huawei’s Ascend P1 smartphone made an impression.

With the introduction of the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) version of the Android OS, companies like Huawei stand to be the big winners. While competitors Samsung, HTC and Sony attempt to differentiate their phones with custom user-interface designs (with varying success), Huawei is likely to use the “pure Google” version of the OS. In the past, this was a disadvantage, but with the effort that Google has put into the design and user participation in a pure ICS experience, this basic approach could prove to be more popular with customers this year.

Unless you feel overriding brand loyalty to one of the bigger players, we suggest you keep an eye out for the P1, it definitely has what it takes to be a winner. Based on the available specs alone, if the price is kept low and the handset proves reliable- we predict big things for this phone in 2012.
