A Perth taxi driver has been cleared of raping a young lady by stating that he was often offered sexual favours instead of cash payment for fares, and that the practice was common.

Mr Prabhjit Singh Gill said he knew of many cab drivers who were often offered sexual favours and also know of many who took up the offer, even though he stated he had never accepted sexual favours.

“You drive, you pick up a girl, and they have no money,” the 37-year-old said. Mr Gill was yesterday acquitted by a District Court jury in Perth of raping a 25-year-old female passenger. He said that he delivered drinks to a car park where another taxi driver was having sex with the woman but did not have any contact with the passenger.

His taxi driver colleague Amrit Pal Singh, was found guilty of raping the woman while she was drunk and semi-conscious. He will be sentenced next month.

Mr Gill has his taxi licence was revoked by the Department of Transport and will no longer be able to work as a taxi driver.
