Taxpayers may pay up to $520,000 for new lightposts so tourists can get better photos of the Sydney Opera House at night.
According to tender documents released, the lightsposts will be built on the eastern side of the Sydney Opera House to reduce shadows and elevate the building “to its rightful place within the Sydney nightscape”.
“It is acknowledged there is a difference in audience between the east and west views of the Opera House, with the eastern side at night being subject to possibly more iconic photographic compositions due to the combined view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge – the majority of real time views being from approaching ferries or from the Botanical Gardens,” stated the tender documents.
The documents said the lighting would enhance the unique identity of the iconic Sydney Opera House.
“You can’t put a price on the Opera House and the value it brings to Sydney. It is a key element of our brand,” Tourism Transport Forum chief executive John Lee said.
“The Opera House is a global icon – one of the most recognised and photographed buildings in the world.”
