Rugby league footballer and coach, John Elias, who was accused with harassing a key figure in last year’s NRL betting scandal has been cleared of any charges when it was found that the alleged victim could not remember receiving the offending text messages.
Mr Elias had been accused of harassing TABCorp media manager Glenn Munsie, who had previously claimed that he thought he received a phone call on March 3 last year which called him “a maggot, a dog”. Mr Munsie has since said that he did not know the identity of the phone number and the person who made the call.
Last week, the magistrate in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court decided to drop charges against Mr Elias for two counts of using a mobile phone to harass and menace and cause offence. The case was first brought to attention last year when Mr Elias was charged with attempting to defraud the TAB in relation to the NRL betting scandal. The charges were later dropped.
