Greek Beijing Olympian Christos Volikakis is heading Down Under to compete in the 2012 UCI Track Cycling World Championships from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 April at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena.

The 24-year-old carries golden hopes for Greece in Melbourne, bringing to the table impressive career highlights and recent top form having won gold in the Keirin at the 2011-12 Track World Cup Classics and silver in Keirin at the European Elite Track Championship 2011 in Apeldoorn, ND.
His performances eclipse those of his Greek colleagues. In short: Christos is the biggest thing in track cycling in Greece and one of the most promising track cyclists today.

The Greek supporters are expected to get behind Volikakis as he challenges for a podium finish in Melbourne.
Melbourne will see up to 350 of the world’s best track cyclists representing more than 40 nations as they compete over five-thrilling days for final Olympic qualification points and a prestigious rainbow jersey.

The World Championships ranks only behind the Olympics in importance on the international cycling calendar. A total of 19 events will be contested, ten sessions over five days – nine events for men and seven for women.
All indications are that the 2012 UCI Track World Championships will be the highest standard of track racing seen in Australia since the 2004 UCI Track World Championships.
Tickets for the event start from $15 and can be purchased through Ticketek.
