It has been almost two years since the historic church of Evangelismos in East Melbourne was destroyed by a devastating fire. But this week the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) proudly announced that it will be officially reopened for services this weekend, with the first phase of the reinstatement project complete.

Church liturgies will recommence at the Church of the Holy Annunciation on the eve of the church’s Holy Feast Day, Saturday 24 March at 7.00 pm, with His Grace Bishop Ezekiel presiding over the Vespers service.

“The Greek Community of Melbourne would like thank everyone for their support and their patience,” read a post on the GOCMV’s Facebook page. “Hope to see you there on the 24th.”

The celebratory activities will continue on Sunday with His Grace Bishop Iakovos who will be assisted by a number of Orthodox priests to mark the significant occasion.

While the areas destroyed by the blaze have since been structurally reinstated, works will be continued into the second phase of the project. This will see the reinstatement of iconography, fittings and fixtures.

Built in 1901 by N Longstaff, the heritage-listed building was impacted by a devastating fire in May 2016, which saw priceless icons dating back to the 1800s destroyed. Holding a special place in the hearts of Victoria’s Greek Orthodox community, soon after the fire the GOCMV promptly instated a committee to ensure the place of worship would be restored to its former glory.
