While the Greek capital’s population has been in decline the past few years as a result of the financial crisis, particular areas of Athens continue to see a rise, a study revealing Zografou is one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Europe.

Using Eurostat data, the research was conducted by Sheffield University’s Professor Alasdair Rae who highlighted that the Athenian neighbourhood has 28.880 people per square kilometre.

Contributing significantly to this number is the fact that the campus of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is located in Zografou, resulting in thousands of students living in the area.

Topping the list was Barcelona with 53.119 inhabitants per square kilometre followed by Paris with 52.218, Poland’s Szczecin with 32.752, and Brussels came in fourth with 29.100 people.
