Nearly 20,000 people packed into Etihad stadium to see Greek heavyweights Olympiacos show Melbourne Victory a taste of champion football as they cruised the match to win 4-1 on Saturday night.
Boasting five Greek international players, Olympiacos were too classy for the new A-League team who was le by new coach Ange Postecoglou – who was in the hot seat for the first time since taking the top job. Olympiacos managed to score three goals in the first 25 minutes, while they forgd ahead against a youthful and inexperienced Victory who were missing star players such as Harry Kewell and their goalkeeper Tando Velaphi. Socceroo Archie Thompson was the only scorer for the Melbourne team from a first half penalty. David Fuster scored the final goal for Olympaicos in the dying minutes of the game.
Postecoglou told the media after the match that given he didn’t have his full squad and more players still need to be signed, not to read toomuch into the match. but he said it was good that the players got to sample his caoching style.
