One in three Australians is at an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease, and George Papadopoulos is that ‘one’.
“My dad has stage four kidney disease and is waiting for a transplant,” George’s son Nick told the Goulburn Post.
But in the meantime, the father and son are trying to raise awareness and much needed funds to help children impacted by the disease.
They travelled from Melbourne to Goulburn to take part in Kidney Health Australia’s Kidney Kids Kar Rally, which kicked off on 3 August.
Launched in 1989, this year organisers are celebrating the rally’s 30th consecutive year with over 100 people participating in 45 cars.
Participants are travelling from Goulburn to Ballarat to Quanbeyan, venturing through tracks and trails across National Parks and State Forests, covering 4,000 km in eight days concluding on Saturday.
“We want to raise money for kids as kidney disease is close to our hearts,” said Nick.
The minimum fundraising amount per vehicle is $4,500 with all funds raised going towards supporting Kidney Health Australia’s Kidney Kids Camps. It allows children with kidney disease to enjoy fun filled days of activities, all while continuing to receive the necessary life-saving medical care they need.
Throughout their travels along different Australian country towns, participants are also helping to raise community awareness of the disease.
