One of the most important tertiary education schools of Athens, the University of Economics and Business, kept its doors closed on Wednesday.

This comes as a result of the state it has been reduced to, with drug use and dealing a common situation within its halls and students having to do lessons within filthy classrooms.

The faculty senate has repeatedly been asked for government intervention, to no avail, so they resorted to this extreme measure to save this significant educational establishment. A press statement released by the University pointed out these issues: “With a sense of responsibility and expressing the anxiety of the university community, and in order to defend the right to safety and hygienic conditions, the senate decided to symbolically suspend the operation of the undergraduate programs of the institution on Wednesday, in order to mobilise the state bodies responsible for the immediate and permanent removal of traffickers and drug users from the areas and streets adjacent to the University.”

Students themselves have expressed their concerns and are trying to do whatever they can on order to protect their University, as they have started a petition that has so far gathered over 900 signatures.
