The Greek Orthodox Parish of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene has received a funding boost of $32,500 from the Victorian Labor Government.

The grant is part of the Multicultural Community Infrastructure Fund allocated to support culturally diverse communities to feel connected with their traditional culture as they participate in and contribute to wider society.

The Bentleigh Greek Orthodox Community will be putting the money towards improvements in the church, as well as its hall.

The upgrades to the hall, which is currently used by a senior citizens group, will include air-conditioning, kitchen appliances, tables, along with a safety rail installed in the church.

“This funding will streng-then community participation in our vibrant multicultural society and have an enduring impact on the character and infrastructure of our State,” said Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott.

Member for Bentleigh and fellow Greek Australian Nick Staikos said St Raphael’s Greek Orthodox Church is at the centre of Bentleigh’s Greek community.

“I am proud that the Andrews Labor Government is making a contribution to them,” he said.

“By working together with local multicultural communities, we can build a society where everyone belongs, feels accepted and can freely participate and contribute.”
