Racially-motivated attacks are becoming more frequent and more violent, doctors working at Attica’s major hospitals told Kathimerini. “During every shift we treat six or more cases of beatings of foreigners,” an unnamed surgeon at Evangelismos Hospital said, adding that most victims were treated for bruises, abrasions and knife wounds.

The assailants, who allegedly attack in groups and are dressed mostly in black, cannot be identified accurately. However, victims say the attacks are unprovoked.

Kathimerini understands that a surge in assaults against migrants in the Thriasio district, west of Athens, is connected to far right Golden Dawn’s launch of a branch in the area.

“Since the party opened its [regional] office two months ago, incidents have doubled,” a physician at the Thriasio clinic said.
