It was a special celebration for all Cretans on Sunday, 18 November at the Ivanhoe Performing Arts Centre, as the Cretan Brotherhood’s dance school made a special presentation of traditional dances that are rarely witnessed outside the bounds of Crete.

The element that separates these performances from other, more commonly known ones is their origin, as they come from the more isolated locations and villages of the island.
Also a great impression on the event was made by the traditional sounds of Cretan music and the outfits worn by the performers.

The Cretan dance school has grown in membership from a measly 50 to over 150 in these last five years and this event was a great opportunity for some of the older members to demonstrate the fruit of their labours.

Through the teachings of these dances, the students are taught about the rich cultural heritage and history of the island of Crete.
