Greek Australian Melbourne City Councillor Jennifer Kanis will be seeking the top state district job in the 21 July election.
The coveted Melbourne Ministers Office was just vacated by veteran Labor MP Bronwyn Pike.
As a safe Labor seat, the Melbourne District has been in Labor’s hands since 1908 and Ms Pike has held the seat for 13 years.
Labor endorsed candidate Kanis was elected to the Melbourne City Council in 2008 and holds many coveted portfolios. She is the Chair of the Future Melbourne Committee, Chair of the Parks and Gardens Advisory Committee and Chair of the Disability Advisory Committee.
The seat of Melbourne covers the Melbourne CBD and the suburbs of Carlton, Carlton North, East Melbourne, Flemington, Kensington, Newmarket, North Melbourne, Parkville, West Melbourne and parts of Ascot Vale.
Sixteen candidates will contest the seat.
Voters who cannot vote on Election Day can make a postal vote in advance. Application forms can be obtained from any post office in the Melbourne District and the VEC website (vec.vic.gov.au) or by calling 1300 551 081.
Application for postal votes must be in before 6.00pm on Thursday 19 July.
