The stunning Ionian island of Corfu (Kerkyra) has won the European Film Location Award 2018, which was organised by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) and Cineuropa.
Following the filming of the popular British TV series The Durrells broadcast by ITV and PBS, a drama based on the autobiographical books of explorer and writer Gerald Durrell, Corfu was nominated by the Hellenic Film Commission of the Greek Film Center.
“Corfu is among the most beautiful and popular islands of Greece. Due to its strong historical connection with Europe, this was among the first Greek islands to open to tourism,” Cineuropa commented upon the announcement.
“Located on the northwestern side of the country in the Ionian Sea, Corfu island has a cosmopolitan feeling combined with a special traditional character. Apart from the wonderful beaches, the highlight of the island is the Old Town with the characteristic Venetian style. The Old Town of Corfu island is one of the UNESCO protected Greek monuments.”
Aside from the Old Town, villages the likes of Kontokali, Kouloura, Agios Stefanos, Erimitis, Gastouri, Halikounas, Kouramades and Sinarades that also feature in the TV series, got honorary mentions.
It is worth mentioning that the Greek island took on majestic cosmopolitan locations such as Lake Keretsa in Italy, Tenerife National Park in Spain and Innsbruck in Austria and still managed to come out on top.
