Alzheimer’s Australia NSW has launched a monthly cafe for dementia patients and their carers to meet in the area of St George, New South Wales.
Cafe Connect is designed for dementia suffers of different cultural backgrounds and is run by Director of Support Services of Alzheimer’s Australia NSW Anne Lunnon says the initiative hopes to form an integral part of a dementia sufferer’s life.
“The Cafe offers a great social environment for relaxation and conversation with other people suffering from dementia or caring for people suffering from dementia,” said Anne Lunnon.
Operating in conjunction with the Saint George Migrant Resource Centre, the cafe will be conducted on the third Tuesday of each month at Cherish Cafe Courtyard.
Hoping to see many diverse communities taking the opportunity to sit and mingle, the cafe aspires to bring guest speakers to help sufferers get a better understanding of the illness.
“At the Cafe are also special speakers and is a great way to learn one of the services available to people with dementia in the region,” Ms Lunnon said.
Almost 280,000 people suffer from dementia in Australia. This number is projected to double by 2030.
Reservations are required and the next Cafe Connect will be held on Thursday 17 July at the Cherish Cafe Courtyard, Shop 1, 31 Clareville Avenue, Dolls Point for a gold coin donation.
