The Victoria Government has announced a major overhaul of speed limits. A review to the government has recommended 80 kilometre per hour (kph) “buffer zones” heading into some regional towns be phased out and replaced with signs reading 60 kph ahead.
Speed signs will eventually be simplified and some 50kph speed zones will be increased to 60kph while some 50 kph zones may be reduced to 40kph. Two open road speed zones, the 70 and 90 kph will eventually be phased-out for 80 and 100kph.
The review attracted 600 submissions from members of the public who identified numerous locations where drivers were confused about speed limits. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay welcomes the changes and said that the speed review will make the roads safer with road safety experts deciding which speed limits go up or down.
