The holder of the Guiness World Record title as the world’s oldest active scuba diver, has broken his own record yet again, off the southern coast of Cyprus.

British World War II veteran, Ray Woolley dove at the Zenobia wreck to a depth of 42.4 metres on his 96th birthday on Saturday.

Joined by 47 other divers, Woolley remained under water for a total of 48 minutes.

The Zenobia wreck was a 174-meter ferry that capsized off Larnaca in 1980, carrying 108 trucks, and has since become one of the world’s five best wrecks for diving.

Woolley first claimed the Guinness World Record title on his 94th birthday in 2017, with a dive in Cyprus.

His love of diving has been captured in the documentary, Life Begins at 90 (2018) written and directed by Bejay Browne. In 2018 it won Best Cinematography in a Feature Documentary at the Cyprus International Film Festival.

But the 96-year-old has no plans to stop diving any time soon.

Woolley has his heart set on continuing to dive at least until he reaches 100, and hopes he will be in good health to break the record yet again in 2020.
