AEK Athens handball team have terminated the contract of suspended player Turkish goalkeeper Yunus Ozmusul, 30, for “serious infringements”, according to a statement.

Mr Ozmusul had been suspended for three months after performing a military salute after the Turkish national handball team won against Belgium last year.

The Turkish players had been criticised by the international media after celebrating Turkey’s military offensive in northern Syria with a military salute.

The statement released by AEK stated that the athlete was ousted because he did not meet the “values and ideals” of the club. He has been replaced by Serbian player Milan Kosanovic.

Mr Ozmusul is not the first Turkish player whose contract was terminated over this issue. Olympiakos also terminated the contract of Ali Tinkir for the same reason.
