Greece’s waterpolo team couldn’t contain itself, with a 9-6 win over Hungary in the FINA World Youth Championships.
The team, which contains three sets of sisters including two sets of twins made a strong statement in the pool. 15 year-old Eleftheria Plevritou scored three goals and played an important role in the title win.
She said sharing the gold medal with sister Margarita and the two sets of twins made it all the more special. “It was our target to win this championship and it’s my first national team at a major international tournament so I am very proud,” Plevritou said.
“My sister Margarita and I have been together three years in the national team so it’s very special to share with her.” She is already setting her sights on the Rio Olympic games and is hopeful of her place.
The Greeks led 3-0 early in the second term, 6-2 at halftime and 8-3 with one quarter to play for what really was a comprehensive victory.
Their goalkeeper Chrysoula Diamantopoulou continued her tournament best form, while young Plevritou and the Charalampidi sisters, who live in the USA and will go to college at USC, were Greece’s best.
Earlier in the competition, Russia claimed the bronze medal after edging out USA 13-12.
The Australian teams finished seventh, the men beating USA 5-4 and the women downing Brazil 10-6.
The competition this year was held in Western Australia.
