North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev handed in his resignation on Friday just three months ahead of the country heading to the polls.

A caretaker Cabinet has been set up in order to organise the country’s 12 April elections.

Mr Zaev had become isolated following a French-led EU refusal to begin accession talks with North Macedonia. Both North Macedonia and Albania were blocked by France in a decision supported by the Netherlands and Denmark in October last year.

French President Emmanuel Macron had said that the EU should not accept new members before it reforms itself.

The EU snub prompted Mr Zaev to call for snap elections in April.

Joining the EU was one of Mr Zaev’s key goal, and he was disappointed at failure to secure EU accession despite agreeing with Greece to change the name of his country by signing the Prespes Agreement.

North Macedonian’s Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski has been nominated as the caretaker prime minister.
