Victoria had 1,336 cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, the same total as the day before after two cases were removed and added to interstate tallies and two new cases were confirmed for the state. From these, there are 29 people in hospital of which 12 are in intensive care. A total of 88,000 tests have been completed in the state following an increase in testing.
Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews told the media that “if we continue to see these results, then we would have options that would be denied to us if we didn’t have this virus fundamentally under control.”
He said there is no rush to remove coronavirus restrictions in the state, pointing to other places around the world that eased off restrictions only to employ even tougher lockdowns after that.

“Let’s not give back all the progress we’ve made,” he said, pointing to the need for urgency in enforcing restrictions so that Victorians can have more options in a few weeks’ time.
“Let’s certainly not close off those options by thinking that this is over. And that relative stability in our case numbers means we can go back to normal. We simply can’t.
“We’ve all gotta keep following the rules so that in a few weeks’ time we’ve got some options to ease some of these measures.”
Mr Andrews said he did not want to give people “promises that can’t be kept” and stated that the crisis will run for months “and the recovery will take years”.
