West Adelaide continued their strong start to the season with a convincing 3-1 win over Salisbury United.

Hellas’ senior coach Ross Aloisi could have been forgiven for having a few nervous moments leading up to the clash, given that his opponent, Salisbury United coach was his father Rocky Aloisi, however it was just another game to the younger coach, and there was no denying the fact that the three points were what mattered most.

With 2012 best & fairest Michael Alexandrou free to play after serving his round 1 suspension, he was a welcome addition into the starting eleven, and once the game began quickly settled into the pace of the game.

From the outset West Adelaide’s attacking intent was evident, and Salisbury United were found to be caught out several times, however it was to no avail as the Hellas strikers failed to convert the opportunities.

Striker Harry Skoumbros was lively, coming agonisingly close by cannoning a shot into the woodwork, and Faustin Machochi continued to pepper the goal with chances.

Matthew Kemp was a dominant figure in the middle, and had a foot in most of West Adelaide’s play coming through the middle, and it was in fact Kemp who burst through the lines to pass to Skoumbros, who broke the deadlock to give Hellas a 1-0 lead heading into half time.

West’s coach Aloisi remained cool at half time, encouraging some of the open play however at the same time tweaking a few things he wasn’t overly happy with, and implored his players not to be complacent and let Salisbury back into the game.

In the second stanza, captain Paul Pezos once again continued to stand tall, and along with his partner Zac Elliott, contained Salisbury’s attacks. West Adelaide continued to press and it was again Skoumbros with a fine turn and a well placed shot to give West Adelaide a 2-0 lead.

With the match on the verge of being decided, Salisbury managed to breach the defensive line and through a fine effort, snuck one back to make it 2-1 to the hosts.

Sensing the match was on the edge, Ross Aloisi introduced young gun Anthony Trimboli into the game, and it paid dividends soon after, with Trimboli on the end of some fantastic passing play to give the hosts a 3-1 lead, which effectively decided the fixture.

Striker Harry Skoumbros was happy with his performance but more importantly the squad continued its good start “The boys played well today and I’m happy that we managed to pick up the three points. We’ve got the start we were after so we just will continue to take it week by week”.
