Santorini’s breathtaking caldera draws tourists from around the globe every summer, but this year will be unique due to coronavirus fears. Things are still vague regarding the future and when the travel industry will be back to normal, however the island of Santorini – a forerunner when it comes to tourism – is planning ahead with steps to protect visitors to the island.

Plexiglass installation around sunbeds at popular Perissa beach will protect sunbathers from crowding, allowing for one plexiglass construction per two sunbeds and a 4-metre distance per lounge.

Italian beach bar owner Charlie Chahine told ANT1 TV that there will be plexiglass constructions put into place as soon as the beaches are open again. “We have sanitisers and disinfectants and we will make regular use of disposable towels and mattresses,” he said in a bid to reassure beach-goers at the popular island.

Swimming in Greece was allowed from 4 May, however organised beaches will remain closed until mid-June though a number of government officials hinted that they may be open even sooner.
