While acknowledging the Federal Government’s efforts in supporting Australians during the coronavirus pandemic, the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW argues the needs of one of the most severely affected industries are yet to be addressed.
“A thriving arts industry is integral to Australia’s cultural life and our creative, cultural and entertainment industries require urgent support to survive this crisis. The mass cancellations of events and closures of venues meant they were the first to be hit and will likely be the last to recover,” reads an excerpt from the letter addressed to the Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Signed by President Harry Danalis, the written appeal refers to the NSW Greek Orthodox Community’s long history in firmly supporting “arts practitioners across various disciplines” and how the organisation’s events have been facilitating cross cultural collaboration as well as financial contribution to local businesses.
“We applaud the Federal Government for all it has achieved so far in supporting Australians during the challenging times brought on by COVID-19, however we believe members of the arts community have been overlooked.”

The organisation calls on the government to take concrete action for equitable access to income support, to ensure operations continue for the sector and its businesses and that artists remain employed.
“We urge you to act now to secure the future of Australia’s cultural life,” the letter concludes.
