Maria Dimopoulos was appointed as Deputy Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission in September 2019.

She has resigned less than a year later.

The trained lawyer and expert on multicultural affairs with over 25 years of experience in cultural diversity, gender equity, justice and human rights has worked as a policy adviser, strategist, community advocate, speaker and mentor.

Her experience is uncontested and departure from the VMC is a loss to the organisation.

She wrote on Facebook that her decision to resign was made with a “heavy heart” and stressed that it was an honour to work with the group in her role.

“Our communities deserve genuine and ethical engagement that leads to meaningful outcomes,” she wrote

“In recent months, I have witnessed some inspiring grassroots efforts by communities towards real and lasting change.

“The vision of genuine equality will always guide me. I remain unreservedly committed in continuing to champion human rights, inclusion and greater multicultural engagement in Victoria with the centrality of First Nations history.

“We can’t pick and choose our struggles. We all have a responsibility to strive for social justice and equality in the interests of all communities.

“At this moment in history, we must keep up the urgency around achieving true equality and a better future. Change does not always have to take time. Dialogue is important, but action is critical.”
