Fines totaling more than 230,000 euros were imposed on food stores and traders at meat markets in the buildup to Easter, the Development Ministry said this week.

The checks were carried out from the beginning of March until Holy Week last week, with the main aim of preventing traders passing off imported meat as Greek.

The ministry said that butchers were fined 112,500 euros for giving their customers false or inadequate information. Traders at open-air markets were fined almost 60,000 euros.
