Anestis Panidis, whose mastery of the Pontian lyra brought joy to many, passed away a few days ago.

Born in 1933 at Ptolemaida, he migrated from Greece to Adelaide, South Australia, in 1964.

His godfather taught him how to play the Pontian lyra during his teenage years and he was passionate about his music. He was influenced by the elders and followed a traditional way of playing. In Adelaide, e was the sole lyra player at functions of the Pontian Brotherhood of South Australia.

He was married to Fotini and had two children, George and Athena.

The death of George, who passed away at the age of 17, scarred both parents and was the most traumatic experience in Panidis life.
