The US election is currently too close to call with both US President Donald Trump and Joe Biden having legitimate paths to Victory. It could be days before the winner of the elections can be confirmed.

At the moment Mr Trump has claimed 214 seats, and Mr Biden has 248 but 270 are needed to win.

As had been foreshadowed prior to the elections, Mr Trump prematurely claimed he won, however this is not the case yet. It had also been predicted that he would not accept the results if he lost and would cast doubt over the legitimacy in voting. On Twitter, Wednesday (US local time), the Trump campaign pointed to “reports of irregularities” and would be requesting a recount in the state of Wisconsin where Mr Biden has a knife-edge lead. Mr Trump also vowed to fight for victory in the Supreme Court as Mr Biden’s campaign supporters said he was poised to win.

Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien:

"There have been reports of irregularities in several Wisconsin counties which raise serious doubts about the validity of the results. The President is well within the threshold to request a recount and we will immediately do so.” pic.twitter.com/YwiNAxzocx

In Michigan, Mr Biden turned around Mr Trump’s lead and he also defeated him in Maine.

To win, both candidates need to win a majority of electoral college votes, with the key number being 270. States like North Dakota, which put Mr Trump ahead until mail-in votes are counted, just have a minimum number of three.

The high proportion of mail ballots could flip some of the results.
