Melburnian Greeks stood by the Smile of the Child organisation against this year.

The philanthropic event which takes place every year was not able to continue due to restrictions, however many members of the Greek Australian community helped Betty Athanasaki gather money for the group created 25 years ago following the wishes of 10-year-old Andreas Giannopoulos shortly before he died.

The organisation helps children, catering to the needs of vulnerable children who may be sick, missing, in situations of domestic violence, caught in poverty and in any other situation.

The Greek Australian group gathered funds to support the organisation. A total of $6,750 was gathered as of Wednesday. Key donators included: Dessie Kontis $2,000, Betty Athanasaki $1,000, Melbourne Association from Serres $500, George Kardas $500, Pantheon Confectioners Coburg $200, Angela Tsoni $150, Voula Nikolarea $150, Betty Atzemi $100, Voula Balta $100, Mary Piperia $150, Lambros Tapinos $200, Connie Panopoulos $50, Nick Congas $100, John Tsoukalis $100, Eleni Kenou $100, Eleni Koutsovasili $200, Georgia Baki $100, Lucia Petrani $100, Blue By Australian Seafood Fish & Chippery $200, Panos and Efi Margariti $500.00, and three anonymous donours offering $250.
